AI Voice Technology Used With Malicious Intent By Scammers
In times of ’emergency’, panic, and or stress, we can sometimes jump the gun and make ‘shotgun’ decisions that we would not normally make. Recently a post reminded us how we are going to need a lot of education, a lot of prevention and a lot of understanding in the wake of horror stories such as the one above. I will post just a quick summary of the events that have been taking place, and the confusion that these scams creates, also prolongs and separates the perpetrators from the victims, that much more…
• AI models designed to mimic a person’s voice are making it easier for scammers to target vulnerable people.
• Software requires only a few sentences of audio to convincingly produce speech that conveys a speaker’s sound and emotional tone.
• Elderly people are often targeted, and it can be difficult to detect when a voice is inauthentic.
• Impostor scams are the most frequent type of fraud reported in 2022 and victims have lost over $11 million.
• It is hard to trace calls, identify scammers, and retrieve funds due to the scams being run from anywhere in the world.
• Raising awareness is the best defense against these types of scams, and any requests for cash should be treated with skepticism.
Be sure to understand the technology, how it can be abused, and be sure to educate the vulnerable, especially children, the elderly, and anyone who does not take this serious!
